Legendary People: John Simpson Kirkpatrick and his donkey

Simpson was a person who had a strong sense of responsibility to others and he became a national hero of Anzacs. He was born in Britain in 1892 and enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force. Simpson served at Gallipoli in the Australian Medical corps till he was killed on 19 May. He used the donkey which was brought for carrying water and he managed to transport wounded soldiers in dangerous conditions from the fighting line to the beach on Anzac cove. He acted with the donkey as an independent team. He rescued over 300 soldiers. While he was carrying 2 wounded soldiers on donkey he was killed by machine gun fire. His tomb is on the beach at Hell Spit, Gallipoli. On his gravestone it is written: He gave his life that others may live.
